This is 2-day workshop creating the image "Wake Up Cup" in my technique, Material Matrix. It is all about piecing; no fusing here! You will learn this technique so that you can go on and create your own photo in this way. Topics covered include, but are not limited to: color, value, how to make a matched binding, piecing techniques, and "seeing" in a different way.

Student supply list: Sewing machine in good working order, with a 1/4" foot Rotary cutter and mat, with a sharp blade Omnigrid ruler for cutting 2.5-inch squares, any length The photo with the grid (Download the attached PDF) A neutral thread Sewing kit with the usual tools: scissors, seam ripper, etc. Pens or pencils for marking light and dark fabric A stack of 3" Post-Its for isolating the squares on the photo A piece of cardboard, approx.12" by 12" to arrange your squares and transport to the ironing board Paper and pen if you like to take notes (I have handouts) Fabric (see note below)
Regarding fabric: With the photo I have supplied, you will need to begin collecting pieces for class. As you would imagine, you will not be buying yardage, but will need pieces in small amounts to interpret your photo: fat quarters, 1/8-yard cuts, even scraps. You want a range of values within each color as far as the photo dictates. Look through your stash first, then take the photo with you to shop if needed. Be adventurous in your selections: please include prints, ombres, stripes...polkadots are good too!! We will be cutting 2.5-inch squares.
PLEASE DO NOT CUT ANY FABRIC BEFORE CLASS. If class participants share, then we will have a nicer variety. For this piece, you will need in-class fabric in the following colors: white, grey, green, purple, and a small amount of brown. You will notice in my sample I took some liberties in the intensity of my purples and greens; artistic license at work! Choose what you like and want to work with. Pay attention to values. You may bring jelly rolls and other 2-1/2" strips if you have them; just know you will need bigger pieces too, and most of the time.

Working with improv can be wonderfully freeing, yet the outcome can seem overwhelming to the senses. Choosing constraints at the outset of an improv project can not only lower the decision-making burden that can seem overwhelming, it can also ensure your composition finishes with dramatic flair.
In this class, you will explore several different variations of improv triangles, and experiment with variables that will alter the look of each variation. You will then incorporate these blocks into a large wedge layout to make a 24” square quilt top that can be finished as either a wall hanging or throw pillow cover. This class is appropriate for intermediate quilters or confident beginning quilters with a willingness to explore.

This class will cover a variety of strategies to improve your curve sewing technique and introduce you to using the Curve Savvy ruler by Creative Grids for cutting quarter circles and arches with a variety of diameters.
Dew Drops is a dramatic modern design that is perfect for a 2- or 3-color layout, and also works beautifully with a variety of colors filling the center circles. In class, you will sew several blocks, and assemble at least one circle. While optional, a little pre-work before you come to class will make your fabric easier to work with when cutting and sewing curves - see the supply list for instructions and a link to a video tutorial for this step.

Join Giuseppe Ribaudo of Giucy Giuce for Re, currently only available as a workshop. Re is a modular foundation paper pieced pattern in which the sewist decides what size blades (from 3 choices) they would like to use and also the frequency in which the blades appear, meaning you can choose to eliminate some blades entirely. Make the blades the same size, make them all different, leave spaces... This creates countless variations!

Improv meets foundation paper piecing meets mystery quilt. Need I say more?! Join Giucy Giuce as he demonstrates his foundation paper pieced approach to improv sewing in this BRAND NEW workshop, Controlled Chaos: An FPPers Approach to improv!
We'll draw improvisational elements at random from a bag. You will then learn to draft your own improv-inspired FPP designs based off the mystery element. The motifs will be the same, but everyone's pieces will be uniquely their own! We’ll cover all sorts of looks and styles. Triangles, flying geese, stripes, wonky shapes. Whether you're an FPPer who loves the look of improv but longs for the structure of paper piecing, or you're an improv sewist looking for a new way to approach your work, this workshop truly has something for everyone.
In the workshop, we will make an 18" pillow top/mini quilt, but you will also receive an inspiration packet with ideas for using the technique to make a quilt. Bring an adventurous spirit to what is sure to be an exciting class you won't want to miss!
