Sewing Machine required

This is 2-day workshop creating the image "Wake Up Cup" in my technique, Material Matrix. It is all about piecing; no fusing here! You will learn this technique so that you can go on and create your own photo in this way. Topics covered include, but are not limited to: color, value, how to make a matched binding, piecing techniques, and "seeing" in a different way.

Kit/handout Fee: $5 (Paid to the teacher in the classroom).
Kit includes:

Handouts and a special tool for creating my technique.

Student supply list:
Sewing machine in good working order, with a 1/4" foot
Rotary cutter and mat, with a sharp blade
Omnigrid ruler for cutting 2.5-inch squares, any length
The photo with the grid (Click here to Download the PDF file)
A neutral thread
Sewing kit with the usual tools: scissors, seam ripper, etc.
Pens or pencils for marking light and dark fabric
A stack of 3" Post-Its for isolating the squares on the photo
A piece of cardboard, approx.12" by 12" to arrange your squares and transport to the ironing board
Paper and pen if you like to take notes (I have handouts)
Fabric (see note below)

Regarding fabric: With the photo I have supplied, you will need to begin collecting pieces for class. As you would imagine, you will not be buying yardage, but will need pieces in small amounts to interpret your photo: fat quarters, 1/8-yard cuts, even scraps. You want a range of values within each color as far as the photo dictates. Look through your stash first, then take the photo with you to shop if needed. Be adventurous in your selections: please include prints, ombres, stripes...polkadots are good too!! We will be cutting 2.5-inch
squares.

PLEASE DO NOT CUT ANY FABRIC BEFORE CLASS.
If class participants share, then we will have a nicer variety. For this piece, you will need in-class fabric in the following colors: white, grey, green, purple, and a small amount of brown. You will notice in my sample I took some liberties in the intensity of my purples and greens; artistic license at work! Choose what you like and want to work with. Pay attention to values. You may bring jelly rolls and other 2-1/2" strips if you have them; just know you will need bigger pieces too, and most of the time.

Feel free to call or email me with questions or concerns. Sandra Bruce, (530) 210-9748, sandrabruce13@icloud.com.

* SEWING MACHINES ARE NOT PROVIDED IN THIS CLASS. Bring your own machine in good working order, pedal and cord.

Sewing Machine and Supply storage: For your convenience, we have available, free of charge temporary and overnight storage at the class registration desk located at Nevada Office 1, across the hall from classroom N5 on the lower level of the hotel.

New threads require understanding for easy sewing. Proper needle, feet and tension make sewing with decorative threads a breeze. Some threads are too large for the needle, so how do you work with them? These threads may be better used in a foot. Should you stitch from the right side of the fabric or the wrong side?

Unleash the possibilities of thread as you discover which to use in the sewing machine needle and which to use with a foot. You can relax when you know the proper techniques. Sew crooked or straight. It’s an adventure the easy way. Create a masterpiece of thread embellishment to showcase your work that can later become a wall hanging, portion of a garment or handbag.

Making a collage garment is pure fun; you use either a sweatshirt base or use a foundation style base. You will choose solids and small prints that will blend with the theme fabric - think Asian, flowers, animals, fish etc.. You do not wash the fabric prior to the collage process – just before the binding is to be added, you will wash and dry the garment to get the texture of the raw edge stitching,

Kit/handout Fee: None

Student supply list:

1. Purchase a sweatshirt that is two (2) sizes larger than you wear. DO NOT PREWASH.

2. Fabric: a fabric that has animals, a flower of different sizes, Asian birds, fish, etc., something you can cut apart. Choose other fabrics that pick up color from the main fabric, some solid and small prints that do not overpower the main design. Thread to match the fabric and the color of the sweatshirt. If you prefer to line your jacket, purchase coordinating fabric and thread. DO NOT PREWASH YOUR FABRIC.

3. Sewing machine with free motion foot. General sewing supplies, including a small pair of scissors for cutting sections of the fabric apart. Make sure you have extra needles for your machine.

If you have any questions, call me at 209-296-4926.

Spiral Patchwork is the innovative piecing method developed by Linda McGehee. Begin with a jelly roll to eliminate cutting or cut your own strips at various widths. Use the serger for faster piecing! Use two fabrics or as many as thirty to stitch the sets. Sew the sets into a tube or spiral. When the spiral is opened, the patchwork design remarkably repeats with no fabric waste. Linda promises, "What looks so involved is actually quite simple." You can match the strips for one look or mismatch for an entirely different look. The selection of fabric color, width of strips, and piecing process that makes the difference. Add a few rows of corded piping for additional detail.

The spiral patchwork can go into a quilt, a wall-hanging, pillow, garment, handbag or wherever you choose. "Bring your sense of adventure to class. It's one of those techniques where you really can't go wrong!"

Recycling has become the rage, and denim is at the top of the list. What can be more fun than having a pillow that reminds you of special times when you wore those jeans? The pockets are already stitched, so there is no need to worry about that detail. Add an additional pocket for book or magazine storage. Add a ruffle around the edge using the narrow-rolled hem. Differential feed takes care of the gathers. Stitch a zipper in the back for easy washing. All this is completed on the serger.

Kit/handout Fee: $15 (Paid to the teacher in the classroom).
Kit includes:
Zipper, fabric for ruffle, and instructions

Student supply list:
1 or 2 pairs of jeans. Their size determines the size of the pillow.
Ruler at least 18" long
rotary cutter with a new blade
cutting mat
thread clips and pins
marking pencil
Anything that makes your sewing easier.

What do all quilters have, despite the techniques they love to do? Scraps! This is a workshop where you learn different ways to assemble those scraps we save and cannot bear to get rid of. This is a very freeing and fun workshop, guaranteed to not only use up some scraps but create a one-of-a-kind quilt while learning about color, value, and block techniques!

Kit/handout Fee: None

Student supply list:

Sewing machine in good working order (don’t forget pedal and cord)
Neutral thread
Typical sewing kit: scissors, seam ripper, pins, etc.
Cutting mat at least 12" by 18"
Sharp rotary cutter & ruler (best size 2-1/2" by 12" or close)
Fabric (see note below)
Paper and pencil for doing the math for your final quilt size and division of colors
Extra light, if needed

Note: Fabric is of course, the most important element of this project. This is a chance for you to use up some of the scraps you have been saving! Look especially for focal fabrics that have “pictures” or interesting images that you can feature in your quilt. Almost all fabric is workable: stripes, polkadots, prints, solids, batiks, even UFO blocks. You should think ahead as to which colors you want to focus on and bring scraps in those colors.

If you want to make a rainbow effect as you see in my sample, you will need yellow, orange, red, purple, blue, and green, but any combination of any number of colors is possible. The rainbow effect is best for subtle blending of one color to the next, if that is what you’re after. Distinct color separations are OK too, where a more striped effect is desired. As you can imagine, you won’t need yardage, but some ombre fabrics are nice for having many colors, in which case you might want more than a scrap ;-) When in doubt, bring it! We will have a share table so everyone will have the optimum variety to work with. Keep in mind this is a 4-hour workshop, so when thinking about colors, you may only need 3 total to get started. Look at my website for ideas! https://www.sandrabruce.com/quilt_scrap_vortex_class-.html

Angelina fibers are iridescent fibers that will bond with themselves at relatively low temperatures to produce a non-woven type of fabric. Angelina comes in a wide range of colors. Learn about the many exciting ways you can use this unusual fiber in your art quilts. You will use an original dragonfly drawing provided by the instructor and translate this into a fabric collage using innovative art quilting techniques. You will fuse your quilt top in class, and I will demonstrate my techniques (free-motion quilting, thread painting, couching, bobbin drawing), so you can finish it at home.
