My
love of quilts began when I was neighbors with the quilt
artist Therese May in the early 1980’s when she and I began
a quilt group. My background is in illustration and
lettering, which was my freelance career for over 25 years.
This influenced my quilt work greatly and set me up for the
work I went on to do. In 2010, I acquired a longarm quilting
machine and began freemotion quilting, using my drawing and
writing skills into my stitching.
My teaching
repertoire includes Material Matrix, Color Dance, Stitching
Words, and Scrap Vortex, all of which can be seen on my
website. You may find me at
www.sandrabruce.com.
This is 2-day workshop creating the image "Wake Up Cup" in my technique, Material Matrix. It is all about piecing; no fusing here! You will learn this technique so that you can go on and create your own photo in this way. Topics covered include, but are not limited to: color, value, how to make a matched binding, piecing techniques, and "seeing" in a different way.
Kit/handout Fee: $5 (Paid to the teacher in the classroom). Kit includes: Handouts and a special tool for creating my technique.
Student supply list: Sewing machine in good working order, with a 1/4" foot Rotary cutter and mat, with a sharp blade Omnigrid ruler for cutting 2.5-inch squares, any length The photo with the grid (Click here to Download the PDF file) A neutral thread Sewing kit with the usual tools: scissors, seam ripper, etc. Pens or pencils for marking light and dark fabric A stack of 3" Post-Its for isolating the squares on the photo A piece of cardboard, approx.12" by 12" to arrange your squares and transport to the ironing board Paper and pen if you like to take notes (I have handouts) Fabric (see note below)
Regarding fabric: With the photo I have supplied, you will need to begin collecting pieces for class. As you would imagine, you will not be buying yardage, but will need pieces in small amounts to interpret your photo: fat quarters, 1/8-yard cuts, even scraps. You want a range of values within each color as far as the photo dictates. Look through your stash first, then take the photo with you to shop if needed. Be adventurous in your selections: please include prints, ombres, stripes...polkadots are good too!! We will be cutting 2.5-inch squares.
PLEASE DO NOT CUT ANY FABRIC BEFORE CLASS. If class participants share, then we will have a nicer variety. For this piece, you will need in-class fabric in the following colors: white, grey, green, purple, and a small amount of brown. You will notice in my sample I took some liberties in the intensity of my purples and greens; artistic license at work! Choose what you like and want to work with. Pay attention to values. You may bring jelly rolls and other 2-1/2" strips if you have them; just know you will need bigger pieces too, and most of the time.

What do all quilters have, despite the techniques they love to do? Scraps! This is a workshop where you learn different ways to assemble those scraps we save and cannot bear to get rid of. This is a very freeing and fun workshop, guaranteed to not only use up some scraps but create a one-of-a-kind quilt while learning about color, value, and block techniques!
Kit/handout Fee: None
Student supply list: Sewing machine in good working order (don’t forget pedal and cord) Neutral thread Typical sewing kit: scissors, seam ripper, pins, etc. Cutting mat at least 12" by 18" Sharp rotary cutter & ruler (best size 2-1/2" by 12" or close) Fabric (see note below) Paper and pencil for doing the math for your final quilt size and division of colors Extra light, if needed
Note: Fabric is of course, the most important element of this project. This is a chance for you to use up some of the scraps you have been saving! Look especially for focal fabrics that have “pictures” or interesting images that you can feature in your quilt. Almost all fabric is workable: stripes, polkadots, prints, solids, batiks, even UFO blocks. You should think ahead as to which colors you want to focus on and bring scraps in those colors.
If you want to make a rainbow effect as you see in my sample, you will need yellow, orange, red, purple, blue, and green, but any combination of any number of colors is possible. The rainbow effect is best for subtle blending of one color to the next, if that is what you’re after. Distinct color separations are OK too, where a more striped effect is desired. As you can imagine, you won’t need yardage, but some ombre fabrics are nice for having many colors, in which case you might want more than a scrap ;-) When in doubt, bring it! We will have a share table so everyone will have the optimum variety to work with. Keep in mind this is a 4-hour workshop, so when thinking about colors, you may only need 3 total to get started. Look at my website for ideas! https://www.sandrabruce.com/quilt_scrap_vortex_class-.html
