Working with improv can be wonderfully freeing, yet the outcome can seem overwhelming to the senses. Choosing constraints at the outset of an improv project can not only lower the decision-making burden that can seem overwhelming, it can also ensure your composition finishes with dramatic flair.

In this class, you will explore several different variations of improv triangles, and experiment with variables that will alter the look of each variation. You will then incorporate these blocks into a large wedge layout to make a 24” square quilt top that can be finished as either a wall hanging or throw pillow cover. This class is appropriate for intermediate quilters or confident beginning quilters with a willingness to explore.

Is your anxiety about sewing curves holding you back from sewing all those beautiful modern quilts? The gentle curves in this quilt are perfect for the curve beginner! Learn to sew curves as you work on this modern twist on the half-square triangle (HST), and explore color contrasts that affect the look of your final product. This class will cover a variety of strategies to help you be successful sewing curves as well as examine how your fabric placement choices affect the final look of your quilt.

Learn the two-at-a-time method for making HSTs, then dive into the world of curves. as well as a variety of tips and tricks for cutting and sewing curves accurately. Finally, learn how to trim this block accurately so it lines up nicely with its neighbors.

Do all those beautiful quilts with curves intimidate you? Learn to sew curves with confidence as you complete this strikingly modern quilt. This class will cover a variety of strategies to improve your curve sewing technique and introduce you to using the Curve Savvy ruler by Creative Grids for cutting quarter circles and arches with a variety of diameters.

Dew Drops is a dramatic modern design that is perfect for a 2- or 3-color layout, and also works beautifully with a variety of colors filling the center circles. In class, you will sew several blocks, and assemble at least one circle. While optional, a little pre-work before you come to class will make your fabric easier to work with when cutting and sewing curves - see the supply list for instructions and a link to a video tutorial for this step.

Design a high-impact improv quilt! Incorporating dramatic negative space with improv-pieced blocks can generate striking quilts with plenty of visual interest. Embark on your own design journey as Michelle guides you along the process every step of the way.

Michelle will show you how to achieve these great designs with just paper, pencil, and a scientific calculator you can use on any smartphone! You will leave this class with a blueprint and plan of attack for your very own wedge improv quilt, as well as the skills necessary to plan any number of quilts based on a modified wedge layout. This is a no sew workshop for INTERMEDIATE quilters.

Color Theory for Quilters (aka How do I pick fabric for my quilt?) Ever wonder why some quilts sing while others fall flat? While there are multiple factors at play, color choice and placement have a huge effect on the success of your design. In this class, learn the basic color theory terminology, then dive into several ways to use this new knowledge to help you pick fabrics for your next favorite quilt. You will explore these lessons as you create several small raw-edge appliqué compositions which you can finish as mug rugs at home.

Kit/handout Fee: $10 (Paid to the teacher in the classroom).

• 10 fat sixteenths of a variety of colors
• class handout with design template
• batting • cardstock (for postcard finish option)

Do you love sewing curves, and like the precision cutting of templates, but don’t like accumulating all the extra plastic associated with custom templates? Learn to use circle rulers, like the Circle Savvy Ruler by Creative Grids, to cut a variety of shapes based on a quarter circle, and you won’t have to purchase a custom acrylic template for each design you want to do! Not only will you save on the plastic associated with multiple acrylic templates, you’ll learn how to use the Circle Savvy Ruler in an unconventional way to cut pieces in a more fabric-economical manner!

In this class, students will learn to use the Circle Savvy Ruler to cut quarter circles, quarter circle arches, and background arches in a way that minimizes fabric scraps. Starting with paper templates from a drunkard’s path variation involving one of each of these shapes, Michelle will demonstrate how to determine the size of the fabric square or rectangle you will need, and the modifications necessary to use the Circle Savvy Ruler when making the curved cuts. Along the way, students will learn how to apply this concept to their own designs, or other patterns they have at home that involve quarter circle shapes from small to large, and everything in between!
