Jeanne Pincha-Tulley - Color2Dye4

Growing up in Alabama with two aeronautical engineer parents, their concept of “crafting” involved metals, electrical wires, or one was a “artistic painter’. That’s it. I embroidered. I did point out the needle was metal. This skill lapsed for decades while I raised a family and built a great career in the wildland fire service.

To reengage with non-adrenaline junkie cultures, I learned to quilt. After testing many techniques, I settled on appliqué. I love appliqué! I can imitate Nature's designs faster than piecing. That’s important, as I spent decades running around the woods. Ok…most times the “woods” were in the process of charring. However, in my quilting world, the “woods” are alive, growing, and frequently floral!

Wool and I became buddies. It’s adaptative and easily prepared. I dye my own wool for a wider color/texture range. I mix wool and cotton fabrics to add “flare” to my designs.

It struck me one night: I could embrace my embroidery roots and combine it with my appliqué fetish. I broadened my knowledge beyond the two stitches to enhance my appliqué. Now I appliqué and give ample embroidery time to each block to create a quilt that will never grace a bed. jpinchatulley@gmail.com

Welcome to this wool appliqué class!!! This class teaches a few appliqué techniques and a couple of starter decorative embroidery stitches to create a vibrant wool coaster.

There are four separate design kits offered. Each kit has the materials required to create an individual wool coaster. Each kit includes a backing, a primary wool background, some pre-cut pieces ready to be attached to the background, hand sewing needles, and coordinating silk threads. To provide hands-on learning, one design piece is not pre-cut. This uncut piece will be used to demonstrate how to go from a pattern and wool in hand to pieces ready to assemble for the design.

Participants practice how to interpret a pattern and prepare the necessary pieces. Appliqué paper or freezer paper is included in the kit to trace the pattern piece.

Cotton floss, pearl cotton, and wool threads will be provided to participants for experimentation with a few decorative stitching techniques.

Kit/handout Fee: $15 (Paid to the teacher in the classroom).
Kit includes:
Small wool appliqué project with most pieces precut (one left to learn how to trace and cut); pattern; appliqué paper; (2) hand needles; Silk thread to match project; wool to practice embroidery stitches; cotton floss to practice stitching.

Student supply list:
• A light table (people can share)
• Pencil and eraser
• Small ruler to use to draw straight lines
• 4” or 6” Serrated Scissors (for cutting wool)
• 4” Scissors (for cutting threads)

This is a quick tour of a journey from earning the basics of quilting to a joyful obsession with wool appliqué. If you love to create quilts that tell a story, appliqué is one of the most versatile ways to express creative ideas. Working with felted wool is a tactile experience and is an extremely forgiving medium to work with to create appliqué pieces.

This lecture will highlight my personal journey in finding that quilting outlet that is both creative and easily constructed. I’ll share the ease of implementing designs, the challenges, and lessons learned from working on felted wool projects. Foundational skills such as finding and creating felted wool will be discussed. Preparation time and methods, plus embellishing basic embroidery stitches, will be included.
