Let’s create whimsical improvisational birds, one block at a time. In this workshop, you’ll be making one to two large squares -playful, folk-art bird on Fabric-layering fabric, adding texture, and stitching with intuitive freeform lines, you’ll leave with your own one-of-a-kind bird Block (and the skills to make a whole flock!).
You will raw-edge appliqué your bird by machine, playing with color, pattern, and composition.
Kit/handout Fee: $20 Paid to the teacher in the classroom. Kit includes: Template and patterns.
Student supply list: Sewing machine in good working order. 1-2 fat quarters for background or a fabric 12” x 12” or bigger, a array of Fabric cuts anywhere from 1 quarter to a half a yard for bird, flower motifs fabrics, Elmer’s washable glue sticks (1-2), heat a bond lite, freeze paper, pencil, sharpie, pearl cotton #8 in black & white, thread (for sewing machine), needle, thimbles for hand work, a piece of backing fabric and batting for your quilt sandwich (remember, this piece needs to be bigger than your front piece) all sewing supplies (scissors etc), cutting mat and rotary cutter.

Do all those beautiful quilts with curves intimidate you? Learn to sew curves with confidence as you complete this strikingly modern quilt. This class will cover a variety of strategies to improve your curve sewing technique and introduce you to using the Curve Savvy ruler by Creative Grids for cutting quarter circles and arches with a variety of diameters.
Dew Drops is a dramatic modern design that is perfect for a 2- or 3-color layout, and also works beautifully with a variety of colors filling the center circles. In class, you will sew several blocks, and assemble at least one circle. While optional, a little pre-work before you come to class will make your fabric easier to work with when cutting and sewing curves - see the supply list for instructions and a link to a video tutorial for this step.

Learn to create a gallery-ready landscape art quilt. Our landscape is so beautiful and inspiring. Use one of my patterns (choice of Lake Tahoe, Golden Hills, Golden Gate Bridge, Coastal Cliffs, Yosemite Falls, and Monterey Bay). You will learn many techniques: fused applique, free-motion machine quilting, embellishing with Angelina fiber and textile foil, bobbin drawing, how to make shrubs or foliage using water-soluble stabilizer, and how to mount your quilt on stretched canvas for a professional gallery look.
Kit/handout Fee: Pattern $10 (Paid to the teacher in the classroom). Kit includes: Landscape pattern of your choice.
Student supply list: Sewing Machine, Fabric pieces (fat quarters or larger), some prints that remind you of rocks, grass, water, sky, etc., preferably batiks and/or hand-dyed. Hand-dyed fabric will be for sale during the workshop. 2 yds of fusible web (with paper backing) such as Wonder Under (Pellon 805) or Steam-a-Seam. 1/2 yard of batting and 1/2 yard of backing fabric. Learn to sew curves as you work on this modern twist on the half-square triangle (HST), and explore color contrasts that affect the look of your final product. This class will cover a variety of strategies to help you be successful sewing curves as well as examine how your fabric placement choices affect the final look of your quilt.
Learn the two-at-a-time method for making HSTs, then dive into the world of curves. as well as a variety of tips and tricks for cutting and sewing curves accurately. Finally, learn how to trim this block accurately so it lines up nicely with its neighbors.

Working with improv can be wonderfully freeing, yet the outcome can seem overwhelming to the senses. Choosing constraints at the outset of an improv project can not only lower the decision-making burden that can seem overwhelming, it can also ensure your composition finishes with dramatic flair.
In this class, you will explore several different variations of improv triangles, and experiment with variables that will alter the look of each variation. You will then incorporate these blocks into a large wedge layout to make a 24" square quilt top that can be finished as either a wall hanging or throw pillow cover. This class is appropriate for intermediate quilters or confident beginning quilters with a willingness to explore.
