Continuous Bias Binding - WF-36

Make a place mat (square corners) and an oven mitt (rounded corners) using 1/2 inch continuous bias binding with the SIMPLI-EZ bias ruler. Join the ends of the binding to make an invisible and strong seam. Hand-done blind stitch completes the project.

Kit/handout Fee: $20 (Paid to the teacher in the classroom)
Kit includes: Binding material; reversible, pre-quilted fabric; printed instructions.

Student supply list: Sewing machine in good working order; rotary cutter and optional large cutting mat (17" x 23" minimum); basic sewing supplies: light machine thread and bobbin, fabric scissors, sharp embroidery needle and straight pins.

On loan during class: SIMPLI-EZ Bias Ruler; Bohin fine line marking pencil with different colored leads. (Both items can be purchased after class.)

SEWING MACHINES ARE NOT PROVIDED. Bring your own machine in good working order, pedal and cord.
Package & Sewing machine storage is available temporarily and overnight, free of charge.



Copy Cat Sewing Workshop - WW-4

Learn a series of new techniques which enable you to sew clothes just like the ones you already own and love. In this longer-form interactive class, you'll discuss favorite garments of fellow students (maybe yours!), identify the reasons they're so well liked, then decide what to copy and how to do it. Explore Kathy's tried-and-true steps for copying sleeves, darts, seams, and gathers, learn to identify grain line, and more, as you discover how to create a whole new wardrobe -- inspired by your favorite looks and clothes. Learn to add facings, seam allowances, hemlines, smooth curves and more. You'll learn about choosing the right fabrics, and how to correctly add details like ruffles, pleats, and pockets to make a garment more interesting and more "you".

Kit/handout Fee: $25 (Paid to the teacher in the classroom)
Kit includes: Tutorial, Drafting pen, and Seam Allowance Ruler.

Student supply list: A new box of Waxed paper, Cut Right Brand, permanent felt marking pens, paper scissors, Magic Transparent tape (green label) pins, measuring tape. AND: a pair of jeans, slacks or skirt with slash side pockets and a garment with details you want to copy. You can come to class without garments, but Kathy says you get the biggest bang for your buck when you bring what you want to copy! She will review the collection of garments and pick from those to demonstrate her waxed paper techniques for copying ready to wear.

No more discarding newly made clothes because of poor fit! Learning the elements of fit that will enable you to become a better sewer and fitter are essential. Learn from a master "sergeant" the elements of pattern alteration including how to choose the right size, necessary amounts of ease, about the three different methods of alteration, how to combine them, and all the principles and guidelines for success. Then have hand-on experiences using half-scale practice patterns to execute alterations for some commonly needed changes in the bust, back, abdomen, buttocks and arms! All of these exercises will enable you to become a "Sew Successful Seamstress!"

Pattern Alteration: Looking at the Whole Picture - ST-6

Often when we begin a pattern alteration process, we just focus on the biggest change first. STOP! Look at the "whole picture" of the body area we are fitting and check to see if there are multiple alterations that might be needed. This class will give a new awareness in looking at our body differences!

All Serger owners and prospective Serger owners need this information. Kathy will teach you how the Serger operates from the inside out. Learn about burrs, how width is used to improve stitches, how to create a perfect balanced-tension control strip to use for each new fabric and thread. Learn a sequential tension formula that works on any Serger model and all thread types and five-minute Serger pocket that can be added to any pattern. If you have a Serger and barely use it or want to use it with greater proficiency, this is a good class!

The Recipe for a Sweatshirt Jacket - SS-16

The only thing better than reading recipes is eating the finished product! You will love the finished results of the following recipe! Take one prewashed sweatshirt, your size in a unisex sweatshirt, preferably one from a good thrift shop; add pieces of fun and colorful fabric, possibly using materials from unfinished projects; using decorative stitches ~ go crazy as you quilt the jacket; add ribbons, yarns, braids, crystals, paint and anything else that comes to mind. Those are the basic ingredients and we will show you the options and opportunities to make pockets, line the lower sleeves and finish with stunning results. Come have fun ~ ideal for adult or children.
